Location

Lompoc is located on scenic Pacific Coast Highway (California Hwy 1) and Highway 246, 55 miles northwest of Santa Barbara, 155 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 270 miles southeast of San Francisco.

Elevation - 88 feet above mean sea level. Pacific Ocean - 9 miles west of downtown Lompoc.

Geography

The Valley is part of the central California coastal region. Rolling hills surround the Lompoc Valley on the north, south & east. The level Valley is open at its western end to the Pacific Coast shoreline. The Santa Ynez River (dry most of the year) runs east to west through the Valley. Burton Mesa to the north is a chaparral forest, with sandy soil. The hills to the south are mined for diatomaceous (fossil) earth. The Lompoc Valley enjoys worldwide acclaim as the "Valley of the Flowers," Elevation - 88 Feet above mean sea level.

 
Climate

The Lompoc Valley enjoys a mild climate. Summers are usually highlighted by a morning marine layer (fog) which usually clears by mid-day. September through December features some of our best weather, while January through April may be breezy and cool with intermittent rains. A northwest ocean breeze (average hourly wind speed: 6.1 m.p.h.) kicks up almost every day in the afternoon.

There is moderate rainfall, summer fog and no snow.

Important Local Beach Closure Information

During the nesting season of the Western Snowy Plover, From March 1 through September 30, local beaches have restricted access. Ocean Park County Park is closed to the public and only one-half mile of Surf Beach is open to the public during this time. Open hours at Surf Beach are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Open areas are clearly described on signs. Those who are found in violation of the restrictions may be cited by Air Force Security Police.
